Care dinner attendees compile their care sector 'wish list'

1st November 2006

Participants at The Consortium's care dinner were asked what one thing they believe needs to change in order to make life better in the care industry, for both owners and residents.

Here are their responses:

  • Stephen Reynolds of the Methodist Homes Association: "We need to recognise dementia as an illness and provide free care for sufferers."
  • Frank Richardson, Sector Expert and Proprietor of marketing consultancy Solely Marketing: "There are many problems but we need to have a more positive outlook and image - contrast this with the way hospices are perceived."
  • Karen Cox of Somerset Care: "We need to get across to people that there is nothing to fear from walking into a care home."
  • Sue Helliker of Somerset Care: "I would like people to grasp the idea that being elderly can be sexy!"
  • Brian Potter of The Consortium: "My wife has owned and managed a care home for 20 years and we need to ensure that the smaller homes are not forced out of business - there should be a place for both large and small."
  • Melanie Teal of The Consortium: "As in other sectors, we need fewer Government initiatives and more joined-up thinking."
  • Martin Green of ECCA: "The Government needs to clarify the interface between health and social care."
  • David Brindle of The Guardian: "The sector needs to be more proactive and to engage more with the media."
